Ashlee's
Back
In
Sync
Pop
tart
Ashlee
Simpson
says
she
doesn’t
have
anything
to
prove.
“All
I
care
about
is
my
fans.
I
don’t
think
I
have
to
prove
something
to
the
world
—
but,
to
my
fans,
I
want
to
prove
to
them
that
they
can
come
to
my
show
and
have
a
good
time.”
Plenty
of
others
would
disagree.
Since
the
20-year-old
singer
was
caught
lip-syncing
on
the
Oct.
23
episode
of
Saturday
Night
Live,
she’s
been
engulfed
in a
firestorm
of
criticism.
After
her
first
song,
her
drummer
triggered
the
wrong
tape
and,
instead
of
her
second
song,
those
watching
heard
her
voice
singing
her
first
song.
With
nowhere
to
hide,
Simpson
did
an
awkward
jig
and
walked
offstage.
Before
long,
she
was
being
denounced
as
the
embodiment
of
everything
wrong
with
music
today.
Comedians
vied
to
get
off
the
best
Ashlee
Simpson
jokes,
and
in
January,
she
was
brutally
booed
after
a
flawed
performance
at
the
Orange
Bowl
—
though
it
was
undeniably
not
prerecorded.
Amid
the
furor,
Simpson
did
the
only
thing
she
could
do:
She
hunkered
down
against
the
criticism
and
continued
her
first
North
American
tour.
The
second
season
of
her
highly
rated
MTV
reality
program,
The
Ashlee
Simpson
Show,
also
began
and,
instead
of
glossing
over
the
controversy,
won
praise
for
featuring
scenes
from
the
SNL
fiasco
and
the
Orange
Bowl.
And
the
response
of
her
fans
has
convinced
her
that
she
did
the
right
thing:
Lala,
the
third
single
from
Autobiography,
has
followed
Pieces
of
Me
and
Shadow
to
success.
“You
have
to
accept
yourself
where
you
are,”
she
says.
“I’ve
really
learned
to
trust
my
instincts
and
trust
what
I
want
to
do
with
the
situation.
Just
being
in
the
music
business
will
do
that
to
you
pretty
fast.”
Born
in
Waco,
Tex.,
she
started
as a
dancer
and,
at
11,
was
the
youngest
student
ever
admitted
to
the
School
of
American
Ballet
in
New
York.
In
1999,
after
her
family
moved
to
Los
Angeles
to
advance
her
sister
Jessica’s
singing
career,
Ashlee
danced
in
her
sister’s
shows
and
explored
acting.
She
landed
roles
on
Malcolm
in
the
Middle
and
7th
Heaven,
The
Hot
Chick,
and
the
upcoming
movie
Undiscovered.
“I
love
acting,
but
music
is
definitely
my
priority.
It’s
such
a
release,
and
you
get
to
express
what
you’re
going
through
and
feeling
at
that
time.”
The
Ashlee
Simpson
Show
certainly
raised
her
profile
and
played
a
big
part
in
Autobiography’s
July
debut
at
No.
1 on
the
Billboard
charts,
but
Simpson
has
had
it
with
cameras
following
her
around.
“No
third
season,”
she
says.
“It’s
been
a
full
year
of
cameras.
I
need
a
break.”
