Chicago |

Ashlee Simpson, who
experienced a near
career-wrecking debacle in
2004 when she was caught
lip-syncing her supposedly
live performance on NBC's
Saturday Night Live, may
have successfully revived
her career -- on London's
West End. Debuting Monday
night as Roxy Hart in a
production of the musical
Chicago, Simpson received a
huge ovation from the
audience, and on Tuesday
from reviewers, who called
her performance "flawless"
and "impressive." Meanwhile,
it was announced that Jimmy
Kimmel, who opened the 2004
American Music Awards by
remarking, "We're here to
celebrate the music and the
performers who sing and/or
lip-sync it," will return as
host this year.

West End By Storm |

London's West End got a
taste of high-octane
American glamour when US pop
starlet Ashlee Simpson made
her debut in the musical
Chicago on Monday night. The
21-year-old raised the roof
of the Cambridge Theatre
with a flawless performance
in the role of femme fatale
Roxie Hart.
The Texan belle's superstar
sister Jessica was on hand
to provide her with plenty
of moral support as her big
moment arrived. And the
chart-topping singer told
reporters that being part of
a famous family helped her
understand the character she
plays.
"The play absolutely is all
about celebrity and wanting
to be famous and have your
name in the papers," she
explained. "In that sense,
it's been kind of cool
because I've really got to
connect to that because I've
seen that world and been in
that world."
Ashlee obviously wasn't too
concerned about being seen
as a VIP, though. "Doing
theatre has been extremely
humbling because it's not
about who you are," she
revealed. "You are not a
celebrity when you come
here. Everyone is equal –
everyone has to work
together."
She and Jessica weren't the
only famous faces at the
event, as Peaches Geldof and
Coleen McLoughlin also went
along to see the chanteuse
strut her stuff.

Pop star ASHLEE SIMPSON made
her West End debut in the
London production of CHICAGO
last night (25SEP06), and
insists her fame-hungry
character is just like her.
The singer plays murderous
ROXIE HART in the show and
reveals she has lots in
common with the ambitious
villainess. She says, "The
play is absolutely all about
celebrity and wanting to be
famous and having your name
in the papers and your
picture in the papers. "In
that sense, it's been kind
of cool because I've really
got to connect to that,
because I've seen that world
and been in that world."

Pete Wentz a week after
splitting from her
boyfriend.
The singer was previously
going out with Brandon Olita,
the guitarist from her
support band, but her
spokesperson has confirmed
the split.
"(They) broke up about a
week ago. They decided to
take a break," Simpson's
representative told US
Weekly.
A friend of the star added:
"Ashlee has been telling
everyone that she's over
Braxton."
Wentz is reported to have
dumped Buffy The Vampire
Slayer star Michelle
Trachtenberg in order to be
with the 'Invisible'
vocalist, and was seen
kissing his new girlfriend
recently at a New York club.
